Semana Santa 2011 in Oaxaca

My travels have taken me to Monterrey, Coahuila (Monclova and Cuatrocienegas) and Toluca in the last week. Did you know Langston Hughes spent time in Toluca, among other Mexican cities? His father was a manager at an electric plant there. Go figure! But I digress.

Three days ago I landed in glorious Oaxaca, the starting point for my Mexico adventure and one of the planet's most aesthetically evolved cities. Though the schedule is front-loaded with work-related meetings, the mission is to get my fiber on during Semana Santa, Teotitlan del Valle-style.

While in Oaxaca two summers ago, a search for cochineal led me to El Tono de la Cochinilla, a family of weavers committed to preserving traditional weaving techiques, including the use of natural dyes like cochineal, indigo and caracol. Rosario Martinez Vasquez and her husband Ernesto Ernesto Maldonado González offer a course in spinning and natural dyeing and I'll spend part of my time in Oaxaca in their course (hopefully) creating yarn for a project I have in mind.

I'll be updating the blog and posting photos of this trip as well as photos from last year's trip to Oaxaca for Day of the Dead.
